IDOYA or The Basques in the XXI Century is the story of a fictional couple. “Xav” and “Idoya” are Basque by birth and meet by chance in Switzerland. She is the daughter of a wealthy shipbuilder of Bilbao, Spain, whose family, tangled with Basque separatist causes, had moved to Geneva years back. He is a physician trained in Spain and in the US who practices in San Sebastian and occasionally shelters Basque activists. With a price on his head he also has to flee; sick with TB, he is nursed back to health by Idoya’s family in Switzerland. The two become lovers—there is some explicit intimacy—and eventually marry. His medical talks (Too radical? Too advanced?) make him famous. Bounty hunters are on his tail and almost get him through Spain, France, Switzerland and Madagascar…Until they get him…Or do they?
