Twenty-two stories from as many writers in this anthology give a spectrum of Philippine writing in English. The selections span three decades of continuous growth since creative writing in English was encouraged at the University of the Philippines in the Thirties. The pioneers, like N.V.M. Gonzalez and the best of that early group like Manuel E. Arguilla, are represented together with the post-war writers like J.C. Tuvera and Gregorio C. Brillantes. The latter two have consistently won awards for their work as has the latest emerging writer, Wilfrido D. Nolledo. In preparing this Anthology, the Philippine Center of International PEN relied n the judgment of Francisco Arcellana, distinguished writer-critic. The selections in this anthology are Mr. Arcellana's personal choices. Due to circustances beyond the control of Mr. Arcellana, several stories which should have been included in this anthology have been left out. This anthology is the first that is programmed by the Philippine PEN. The Philippine PEN Anthology of Short Stories, 1962, is incorporated in the REGAL SERIES of distinguished Philippine writing, published by Alberto D. Benipayo. Cover design by MALANG.
