A novel set in India during the Raj. The Nawab of Awadh employs an English barber, who becomes his confidant. Craving wealth and power, the barber replaces the Nawab's favourite wife with a choice of his own, and thus it was that a beautiful young Englishwoman became the consort of an Indian ruler.
