It has been almost a year since the intrepid pair of Valerius Maximus and Marcellus Veronus battled the rebellious Frisii nation. Peace and tranquility have once again been restored in Germania. However, the Goddess Fortuna will not let them rest. It all starts again with the mysterious plague related deaths of two of the legates commanding legions along the Rhine. Strange, because there is no plague evident in Germania. At the request of a friend, they agree to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two generals. This puts them at odds with the newly appointed military governor, Marcus Attius Mellitus, a powerful figure of unbounded ambition and commander of the eight legions stationed on the German frontier. Valerius and Marcellus once again have a price put on their heads. They must flee Roman territory to the German side of the Rhine. The two former Roman officers must battle savage German warriors and Rome's own legions in order to survive. Friends become enemies and enemies become friends in a nefarious plot that reaches all the way to the imperial throne in Rome.
