No Job for a Lady is an adventure in the American west with women in the pivotal roles. The central character is Shorty a rough-and=tumble woman teamster. Shorty is an old hand at cajoling a team of horses across the desert. She’s done this man’s job all her adult life and well-known and respected up and down the roads. Sharing this dangerous adventure with Shorty is Eleanor. She is a mail-order bride who came west to share in the toil and satisfaction of making a new life on the frontier. Now she is a runaway. He husband wanted a bird in a cage and not a help-mate. A third women on this adventure is a young Mexican woman, scarcely more than a girl, .who has been sold into slavery. These three women are abandoned by the males at the station and have to survive a harrowing and deadly night. This story is a tribute to all the women who have had to do jobs that weren’t meant for ladies, but who did them well and blazed the trail for all their sisters to follow. As the author says in his dedication, “Bless ‘em all.”
