Taranaki's Cathedral: bringing it to birth
John Bluck This is the story of bringing a cathedral to birth. Over nearly 180 years, beginning as a raupo hut and then a small stone room, St Mary's has stood in the centre of New Plymouth and the turbulent life of Taranaki. In 2010, fulfilling the long-term dream dating back to Bishops Selwyn's days, the parish church became a diocesan cathedral.
With that change came a new role in pushing out the boundaries of what it means to be Christian for Māori and Pakeha in Aotearoa New Zealand. Using the superb images of local photographer Rob Tucker, this book tells how this remarkable transition came to pass.
