#2 Tomorrow's Wilderness
Sea-monsters, Firebirds and Unicorns
Jack Kuhn The intrepid duo of Joy (Prof. Williams) and George (Prof. Martinez) return in a new book! This time, they locate the mythical Ogopogo, befriend a genuine firebird, and discover a young scientist who has build her own fantasy unicorn. An optimistic romp through the future of genetic engineering, retaining a foundation in believable science.
These stories are set in a future roughly 60 years from now (approximately 2080). In each story, George and Joy face a new and exciting adventure. This may be identification or protection of a rare representative of a species (“Proof of the Ogopogo” and “Raiders of the Wet Park”), dealing with genetic constructs which have escaped into the wilderness (“An Out-of-the-River Approach” and “Nearly as Important as Physics”), or participating in creative new scientific research ("Firebird", "Doesn't Like Dogs", and "By Any other Name").
In each story, Joy and George are successful in resolving the issue at hand, typically through some combination of cleverness, scientific acumen, and more than their fair share of good luck.
Although the stories are intentionally optimistic, each story is grounded in real and factual challenges facing the wilderness of the future.
For the reader interested in the underlying scientific details, an Appendix is provided which clarifies the science versus the fiction in each story.
