The Suicide Journal tells the story of Cal, an introverted teenager growing up in a small town in Upstate New York in the 1990s. While Cal has a loving family and wonderful home, he struggles to retain friendships and forge an authentic identity. Cal’s life begins to spiral out of control after he witnesses a horrific incident in high school. Unable to cope with his resulting PTSD and addiction issues, Cal decides to chronicle the most vivid memories of his life before taking it. The story unfolds through a series of vignettes throughout Cal's childhood that are equal parts uplifting and tragic, including the day that changes his life forever. It is largely based on true events, though the names, dates and locations have been altered to protect the identities of those involved.
