The Hundredth Man: Confessions of a Drug Addict

The author recounts his 14 years as a dope addict, traveling the world and experiencing the drug underworld from Hollywood, to Denver, New York, London, Paris, Mexico and elsewhere. In his memoir he recalls his introduction to and descent into addiction (heroin, opium, cocaine, marijuana, etc.) and his struggles, several failures and eventual success in kicking his habits. Tales are woven drawing in scenes from seedy drug dens and their sketchy inhabitants to his run-ins with the police. He describes many aspects of the drug life, including the argot of the fiend, his experience as both a dealer and a stool pigeon, the international efforts at combating the drug trade, various methods of treatment, and the horrors of withdrawal.
