Labeled a mutant half-breed, outcast since childhood, Mathew McCall has everyone around him on high alert after he discovers his twin Areo on the list of casualties. Once he’s reminded that their psychic link will notify him if Areo is killed, Mathew immediately leaves Sea Base Nine in search of her. The discovery of Areo’s beacon draws Mathew to a distant planet. Upon arrival, he locates not Areo but survivors from Oceana - his mother’s destroyed planet. There, Mathew meets Serena, a flamed hair leopardess. And although he knows the dangers in his attractions to this strange feline, the strongest of the mutants cannot fight The Signs. Each time Mathew looks into Serena’s crystal blue eyes, the war, the Oceanans, and the law fades away. Why did Areo have to show up on Oceanica? Her presences is not only jeopardizing Serena’s plans of marrying the Oceanan king, but also forcing Serena to associate with Daehog, the war, and the half-breeds. Her life is already full of uncertainties after being separated from her family and losing her homeworld at the tender age of seven, then forced to create a life on a new planet inhabited by aliens. When she learns she will have to live on a spaceship with a multitude of half-breeds and traitors for seven and a half tides - to chase after Sev who abdicates his throne - Serena is enraged. However, each time her gaze meets with one particular half-breed, her blood starts to simmer for another reason.
