January 19, 2021, presented U.S. Senator Kathryn Wilhelm a dizzying schedule on the day preceding her inauguration as the forty-seventh President and Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America.Kathryn María Hernández Brown was born on September 6, 1969, in Antigua, Guatemala, her family’s home while her father, William Edward Brown III, was the cultural and education attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City. Her mother, Teresa María Hernández Morales, was a native of Guatemala and met Bill at a diplomatic reception.Historically, not only was Katy Wilhelm the first woman to be elected President (both in the popular vote and in the Electoral College), she was the first with Hispanic heritage, the first from the State of Maryland, the first former Peace Corps Volunteer, and the first presidential candidate not to accept corporate and PAC contributions.Maybe this was a dream fulfilled; maybe a nightmare deferred.
