In this mesmerizing novel eight characters take turns telling the story, which begins when a baby is kidnapped from her mother by her estranged father. He takes her to a remote New England compound organized and controlled by a man who claims to be God. A search and rescue is launched with consequences that change everyone's lives. Among the consequences of the initial kidnapping are a mysterious accident above a waterfall; a mock trial on a remote island in Maine; a hitchhiking trip cross-country; and an interview between a scientist and "God." The outcome is a catastrophe that makes the national news, bringing death for some and searching self-discovery for others.
