A few minutes after Sir John Allerdale had mixed himself a stiff brandy drink, he lay dead on the floor. Was he murdered, did he kill himself, or was he the victim of a stupid error on his own part? The world will never know. But that was not the mystery that started Ronald Camberwell off, unwillingly, on his second career as a detective. It was the disappearance of an ebony box containing a quarter of a million dollars in securities and jewels which Sir John had left to his mistress. Whatever had been the cause of Sir John's death, it was certain that the murder of his valet was connected somehow with the missing box.
