The New Pirates of the High Seas

Marine scientist and Scientific American, New Scientist, NatGeo freelancer Olive Heffernan's THE NEW PIRATES OF THE HIGH SEAS, with deep-sea mining scheduled to begin in Spring 2019, a book which argues that humanity's great new frontier is not space but the largely unknown High Seas, examining the explosion of bio-prospecting for new drugs (AZT for instance derives from a sea sponge), the seabed's seemingly inexhaustible metal reserves, attempts to reverse the 50% decrease in marine fish stocks, slavery on long-distance trawlers and mind-bending geo-engineering initiatives to stop climate change, to Rob Sanders at Greystone Books, with Jennifer Croll editing.
