The British Isles are famous for ghosts, with most of their ancient castles and historic houses enjoying a long-standing reputation for being haunted. In a study that incorporates fifty locations, Famous Haunts examines the ghostlore that has accumulated around some of the most haunted places in Britain and Ireland. There are tales of evil warlocks, foul murders, family curses, and blood-drenched executions. There are ghosts of well-known historical figures, vengeful spectres, and nightmarish entities thought by some to still lie in wait to terrorize unsuspecting travellers. The many gruesome episodes that punctuate the histories of the castles and mansions discussed would inevitably feed into a multitude of myth and legend. Some of the hauntings are mere rumour. Others meanwhile are compelling reports of bone-chilling encounters with the unknown, given by credible witnesses. Most of the locations featured are open to visitors.
