What would you do to save the person you love most? Dung-hauler Rufus Lanus has a choice. He can return to thievery or let his wife die. That decision’s easy to make. Others will prove difficult if not impossible. Rufus’s attempt to steal a precious herb to cure his wife of her illness leads him into a labyrinth where he doesn’t know who’s trustworthy, what to believe in, and which way to turn. The medicus helping him may be a traitor and the witch minding his wife might well be insane. The Savior in which he believed most of his life is false. The gods he then turned to could in fact be nothing more than the demigods who deemed magic too dangerous and tried to strip Mystica of numinous power. How ironic is life?
