What did arithmetic have to do with finding a treasure, especially a treasure in Nassau? That is what Gay Carter wanted to know. Even if Gay only passed fifth grade conditionally, it wasn't fair that Uncle Hank made her solve an arithmetic problem for each clue to the treasure that he sent her. Worse, Gay was not going to get to go to the mountains. Instead she was going to Nassau to spend the summer with Aunt Clara in her Bed and Breakfast. The summer turned out to be exciting with expeditions to dig for pirate gold, Boss Flamingo's broken leg, and her new friends, Vickie, Duke, and Chonce. Gay discovers some important things about herself as she searches for Uncle Hank's treasure.
