No Ordinary Sue. The Tale of a Heroic Pumpkin
Hoang Chi Truong During the great flood of 1997 in Northern California, pumpkins from the Sacra- mento farms floated down the river past our bucolic town in Clarksburg on their way to the San Francisco Bay.
This unique event inspired me to write No Ordinary Sue for my children that day but never published the story. While working on publishing my book TigerFish in 2017, California experienced yet another high water year, and I decided to share this historical fiction children’s book with other families.
No Ordinary Sue was a flood refugee. She started her journey as a timid pumpkin. Her neighbor, Lulu later joined her, and their escape turned into an exciting and re- warding journey while helping others in need along the way. In the end, she found her dream life because she acted courageously with generosity and compassion.
