In the summer of 1960 five Englishmen and one American under the leadership of Wilfrid Noyce set out to climb an unknown peak, Trivor (25,370 ft.) in the Karakoram Himalaya. No photographs existed of the mountain-face which the expedition intended to climb, and even officials of Pakistan were unable to locate it, although the summit overlooked both China and Russia. This abstract, unexplored land-mass suggested to Noyce the stimulus of another pass of discovery; the analysis of the magic of the mountain, and its impact upon the very different individuals of his team. In this book he achieves the double focus of a physical ascent and the reflection of a mountain in the mind's eye.
