An Epitaph for Dixie

This is a perspective on the future of desegregation in the South written shortly after the Little Rock school crisis in the Fall of 1957. The author was a Southerner (South Carolina) who viewed his culture with a critical appreciation. Ashmore's editorial writing for the Arkansas Gazette won Pulitzer Prizes for himself and the paper in the fall of 1957, and temporarily cost the paper dearly in cirulation. The book reveals much about the perspective he brought to the problem of race in the South and explores it nuances. The author was later actively involved with the Center for Democratic Studies.
