Morphological Processing of Chinese Words among Elementary StudentsAbstract Research on morphological awareness in Chinese reading has received growing attention in recent years. Many studies used off-line measures to assess morphological awareness in a global way. To understand the underlying mechanism of morphological processing, on-line studies are needed. Study 1 (N = 32) adopted frequency manipulation and examined the relation between morphological structure and character frequency on fifth graders' lexical decision. By priming techniques, Study 2 (N = 40) tested the effects of prime conditions and Chinese literacy skills on fourth and fifth graders' lexical decision. A significant character frequency effect for coordinative words was found. The priming effects on lexical decision depended on Chinese literacy skills. For those who were with above average performance, repeated access to the same morphemes facilitated lexical decision. However, there was no such facilitated effect for those who had below average performance. The findings enrich the literature of morphological awareness in Chinese words through on-line exploration. It may imply that elementary students with different literacy skills differ in their morphological processing. 10.5353/th_b3709018 Language acquisition - Psychological aspectsChinese characters - Study and teaching (Elementary)
