"Your Knot is pounding me!" Shani's mother screamed. She could clearly be heard throughout the whole house. However, it was the monstrous roars of something else residing with her mother that scared her more. With its barks and howls came loud thumping noises. "Bang! Crash! Boom!" they would go in rhythmic fashion. Sometimes fast and sometimes slow, but it shook the old house so much that Shani believed at times that it would eventually collapse. Her mother would scream for more, as if she was somehow directing the thing in her room to make those awful sounds. The monstrous howls and grows had to be her new stepfather. He was a scary man after all. Shani was too old to believe in monsters, but with him, she could make an exception. Ever since her mother remarried, she was afraid of him. From the sounds in his bedroom, she was afraid that he was going to come after her in the night. But where was his son, and her new stepbrother? He too was something different, and just as scary as his father. Maybe he was with Camille, Shani's sister. Who wasn't in her room when Shani looked for her there hoping to hide in the covers beside her for comfort. Yet, where would they have gone so late at night? Shani was getting tired of hiding in her bedroom, and tired of listening to the frightful sounds. This night, she fearfully decided it was time to learn the truth.
