Harford Powel Jr. Amid the universal prosperity of the late 1920s, Boston architect Bob Underwood suffers several setbacks and finds himself penniless. Knowing that he will not accept their money directly, his oldest friends concoct a scheme to aid him anonymously. One evening at their club, they create a fictional Renaissance man talented as a painter, composer, Antarctic explorer, economist, and broadcaster. Then they hire Underwood's son-in-law-to-be at a generous salary to handle the invisible figure's public relations, knowing that the funds will eventually trickle down to him. But can the friends maintain their charade once the U.S. Senate becomes interested in having the multitalented "Harvey J. Buck" join their ranks?
