Louis Peterson Seventeen-year-old Spence is an African American teenager who has been raised in a white middle-class neighborhood his whole life. When one of his high school classes starts talking about racial issues, Spence is confronted with some harsh realities and begins to question what it means to live as a person of color in a white world. Spence's confusion is nurtured by the family's sensible African American housekeeper, Christine, whose warmth and wisdom help Spence come to an understanding of who he really is.
