The story centres around an old family tradition connected with a painting which represents a beautiful woman in blue said to have been possessed by an evil spirit. Family records show that at lengthy intervals this woman appears to be reincarnated in a member of the family--always with disastrous results to herself and others. Finally she reappears in the present day--with what effect must be left to the reader to discover since --to quote one of the characters in the story--"a mystery solved is a mystery spoilt."
