One winter night, the famous actor Arthur Leander dies onstage while performing as King Lear. One of the audiences, Jeevan Chaudhary, rushes up the stage and tries to revive him. When the paramedics arrive, he ends up comforting the young Kirsten Raymonde who witnesses the whole event. Afterwards, he walks home and receives a call from his friend Hua who works at the ER in Toronto General. Hua warns him about the Georgia Flu. Jeevan takes his advice and stocks up on food with his brother in his apartment.
The Georgia Flu spreads worldwide and kills about ninety-nine percent of the human population. This marks the end of human civilization and the beginning of a new era. An era without electricity, gasoline, air travel, shops, or even boundaries between countries.
Twenty years after the collapse, Kirsten is now one of the members of the Traveling Symphony. The Symphony is a group of actors and musicians performing Shakespeare’s plays and classical music in various settlements across the region. Currently, they are on the way to St. Deborah by the Water to collect two of their members. Charlie and Jeremy stayed behind two years ago because they were having a baby. But when the Symphony arrive, they discover that the two, together with their baby Annabel, had fled the town after a dangerous prophet had taken control of it. The group encounters this prophet as well and leaves immediately after sensing danger.
The narrative shifts timeline and focuses on the characters before the collapse. Arthur came from a remote island before becoming an actor. In his younger days, he met and befriended Clark. Their friendship lasted even after going separate Clark left to get a PhD and Arthur started rising in his career. Miranda and Arthur were from the same hometown, Delano Island. They met and fell in love, got married but eventually divorced. Arthur went on and married two more times, both ending in divorce. Jeevan was a paparazzo who tried entertainment journalism but went back to being a paparazzo. He quit again and started bar tending while training as a paramedic. Kirsten was a child actress working with Arthur in King Lear.
The narrative constantly moves back and forth in time to reveal the previous lives of the characters before the collapse and what went on after it up to the present. This also provides for the reader a connection between the past and the present.
