Grange's life has sunk to a nadir, though he doesn't realize how much he's lost. As the story begins, Grange has lost the elemental jewels, he's lost his memories, and he's lost his way back home. He's wandered through the brutal wilderness of the subarctic south, and been rescued by a cold-hearted adventuress who reluctantly saves his life, then abandons him soon after he returns the favor and saves hers. His lonely journey out of the wilderness is interrupted when he stumbles into the midst of sundered nation that hasn't reconciled after its king was overthrown a generation before, and he's suspected by both sides of being a traitor. And even though the gods seem to have plans for Grange, they treat him in ways that seem hard to accept and understand - telling him that he must chose a wife in Southgar, as well as reunite the nation where he is a stranger. And all the time, as Grange tries to make sense of what is happening in Southgar, he knows that the war with the demons is drawing closer.
