It was a routine recovery operation. No one expected Old Sam to survive, caught out alone in the bitter Alaskan night. But no one expected to find his body ripped apart, limb from limb, as if by some monstrous, inexplicable force. Only one creature had the devastating strength necessary for this kind of killing -- the massive Kodiak bear. The creature that began to haunt the remote oil-pumping station and the scattered Alaskan homesteads was possessed by a demented and insatiable hunger. It seemed that no man, Eskimo, Indian or white, could stop the rogue Koadiak's remorseless killing, and that no ordinary bullet could halt its huge bulk.
