The Proceedings of the First General Assembly of "The Incorporation of Providence Plantations" and the Code of Laws Adopted by That Assembly in 1647

This work consists of the proceedings of the General Court of Election of the Colony of Providence Plantations (later known as Rhode Island) on May 19-21, 1647, and the Code of Laws it adopted at that time. This provided the legal foundation for the new colony, which at that time consisted of the towns of Providence, Portsmouth, Newport, and Warwick. Parliament had granted the first charter to the colony in 1644. Editorial commentary is provided by Judge William R. Staples of the nineteenth-century Rhode Island Supreme Court.
