"I've waited too long to decide to come out and live among gays and lesbians. I was almost giddy last night just being one in the great crowd. I felt at home; you've probably heard that before." She sipped her drink and looked toward the door, wondering if Rachael would be coming in soon. "Yes, and have learned many life stories. Thankfully, more are positive stories today but in earlier days, there was a lot of sadness. One young man broke my heart. He so needed his parent's approval when he came out, but it never came. He jumped off the nearby overpass in front of an eighteen-wheeler. Thank God, fewer tragedies like that are happening now." Ed leaned on his arms, looked around for any customers needing to be served; then smiled at Silvia. "You have a great air of confidence in being who you are, Silvia." Silvia smiled, "More than at any other time in my life. I've known since my teen years but there never seemed to be the time or place to acknowledge my heart. Now that my kids are grown and gone their own paths, I've found my best path to happiness, I think." Her eyes sparkled. Just as Jane finished the first taste of her drink, someone behind her asked, "Is this seat taken?" The voice was soft, and almost musical like Marilyn's was. Gentle feelings passed through her heart as she remembered the love of her life. She looked around to answer the sweet voice. Smiling, she nodded 'yes' to the lovely lady near her age with beautiful blue eyes and short reddish brown hair peppered with many strands of silver. "Please do." Jane's heart skipped a beat as she watched her new friend climb onto the stool, and set her small purse in front of her. "Hi. I'm Jane." She couldn't think of what else to say as she looked into those blue eyes and saw something wonderful. In her heart, another door had opened to an unexpected future. Jane couldn’t take her eyes away from Silvia’s. “I’m so glad you came to our table. I feel like I’ve known you somewhere before. I don’t know where, but you seem so familiar.” Silvia patted her shoulder. “You have beautiful eyes, Jane. They remind me of the mysterious eyes of the Mona Lisa; they draw me in and make me want to know you more than for just a quick moment.” The soft voice Jane was hearing touched her deeply. She could listen to it for hours. “Silvia, what’s your story? Everyone here in this beautiful place has a personal story. For most of us, our stories are unique.” Silvia glanced at Jodi and Marvel. Seeing that they were absorbed in their own conversation, she felt comfortable focusing on Jane, a lovely woman near her own age. She wondered how different Jane’s story might be from her own. “I’ve known since my teenage years in the fifties that my heart turned toward girls, not boys; nevertheless, it was not a time to acknowledge that or I could have not become a teacher, my heart’s desire.
