In 1930's New England, a Landlord and his wife struggle to maintain finances. Such a problem prompts both to feel insecure. Reputation is something that holds great meaning to the Landlord and his wife. The couple does not wish to have anyone suspect their financial woes, but soon, a new guest catches wind of their troubles. This new guest is a man who has been betrayed by society, for he once held an affair with a young and radiant man. He seeks solace within a simple and modest apartment building. Sadly, the Landlord and his wife are not sympathetic towards those who are perceived as being different. As the story progresses, the Landlord and his wife begin to become tired of the constant demands of life. They soon hatch a plot to rob their apartment guest, and thus have the means to escape their former lives. Sadly, their plot does not go as planned. When an accidental death occurs, the couple will have to face the ultimate reality.
