R. Gerry Fabian Just Out Of Reach is a coming of age novel. During the end of summer in the early
1960’s, the main character, Jake Johnson, faces various situations which
cause him to examine the changes that life hands him. This novel explores themes
of love, prejudice, deception and loss as viewed by a twelve year old young boy.
Set in the suburbs and later on a farm just outside a small town, the main character tries
to navigate the life of a child in a military family to living a week with his great
aunt and great uncle on their farm. The novel features the flashes of humor, confusion,
trust and sadness that are inherent in childhood.
