This is not your grandfather's Western, although the cover may give that impression. This novel is a character study set in the 1870s of an unlikely hero and the people he meets during this stage of his life. Billy is born an unattractive mixed-race child. During puberty, he suffered additional facial disfigurement from a wolf attack. Further complicating his life experiences, he grows up in a Native American orphanage but is not a tribal member. However, his life's dream is to be a family man and own a cattle ranch. When the story opens he is working as a bounty hunter and is quite good at his job.
The novel is best described by K.C. Finn of Readers Favorites. The following is an excerpt from his summary. "These vividly portrayed characters, each with their passions and motivations, drew me into their world with rich dialogue that echoes off the pages. The blend of historical accuracy with nuanced storytelling created a rich narrative tapestry that moved beyond the cinematic into a multi-sensory experience for the imagination. The exploration of personal relationships in an uncertain environment added depth to the adventure, and the unique format of the story provided a refreshing take on the Western genre. Overall, Billy Two Feathers: Incident At La Mesilla offers an immersive experience that combines historical context, intricate characters, and unexpected twists, making it a memorable read for anyone seeking a thought-provoking and unconventional Western adventure."
