Manuela Soares When I was approached about a book on soap operas, the idea immediately appealed to me. It's always been obvious that with the exception of fan magazines and a few paperback books each year, the field of daytime serials has been sorely neglected. We soon found, however, that we could easily write ten books on such a broad and intricate topic as daytime serials. In this book we have tried to include topics that aren't generally discussed in the fan magazines. We wanted our book to explore as many aspects of the serials as possible - where they originate, how they're made, who watches them and why, and include as many original photographs as we could. At the same time, we wanted to find out how serials have changed over the years, and what were the differences, in story, sets, characters, and ideas, among all the current serial dramas. To accomplish this, we spoke not only to producers, directors, performers, writers, technicians, and set designers, but to the viewers themselves. So sit back, relax, and read about everything you always wanted to know about soap operas. The times that made you once afraid to ask are changing; soap operas have come into their own.
