The Prairie Companions

In the early years of a century, a new world calls to the adventurous. For seventeen-year-old Pat—bright, highly ambitious, and insatiably driven—and her gentle, loyal boarding school companion Clara, the strictures of Victorian English society seem far too rigid and stifling. Chasing a destiny at once exhilarating and terrifying, they set out across a vast ocean, following a dream to northwest Canada where they will build a home together in the wilderness. But the wind-swept Canadian prairie is a harsh and merciless landscape for the unsuspecting and unprepared, and two extraordinary, convention defying young women must embrace the wisdom and tribal rituals of a proud indigenous people if they hope to last the killing winter. Still, through hardship and loss, famine and war, Clara and Pat will persevere in their dedicated pursuit of the freedoms denied them in the “civilized” world, finding strength in friendship, hope, commitment, and in the love they will need to survive the relentless cruelties of fate and nature.
