The Adventures of Rita Homez
Jane Watts When I first met Rita Homez, she was a video-game addict who hardly ever left her house on Baker Beach. And what did I do? I unplugged her computer and booted her out the door. Saved her from spending the rest of her life rotting away in front of that screen, living on nothing but Coke and donuts. But she saved me too. Before I came to live with her and Papa Homez, I was stuck at Jolly Kids Village, a group home in San Jose, where I was accused of all sorts of crimes I never committed. Now Rita and I are running around San Francisco together solving mysteries, and no one is better at figuring stuff out than Rita. Her brain is crazy good that way which is lucky for her friend Eric, one of the best surfers in California, because he's getting attacked by sharks every time he hits the waves of Ocean Beach. There's a big surf competition coming up this Saturday and plenty of people in town don't want Eric to compete. Top of the list is Devon Mori, a hot, fourteen-year-old millionaire who designs custom surfboards, and his sidekick, Irene Adler, the most popular girl in the seventh-grade. And there's also the Grays, a spooky father and son who run the oldest surf shop in the Bay Area. But for some reason Rita's convinced that getting her dorky friend Lenny, who thinks he's a Hogwarts wizard, ready for a stupid magic show will bust the case right open. What's up with that? All I know is that Eric is either on someone's hit list or he's just naturally tasty, and if we don't come up with an answer, he could end up a shark treat at this Saturday's competition!
