William Thomas Webb What was the secret of Mandrake Island? It lay out in the creek, forbidding and deserted. On one side of the water rose the huge Defence Base, where modern weapons were made and tested. On the opposite shore stood an old village which progress had left behind.
One man believed Mandrake Island to be the hide-out of a creature from outer space. Some said the place was haunted by the ghost of an ancient druid. Others had other notions, equally fantastic.
A popular singer, a spiritualist medium, a village policeman, a helicopter pilot, a security boss, and an espionage agent, were all concerned with the little island, where druids had once made human sacrifices to a cruel god.
