The Sixth Sense
Lawrence W. Gold Scientists and physicians are only recently appreciating the miracle that is our sense of smell. While one of the oldest of human senses, it may be the least well understood regarding its acuity, its role in brain function, and in human sexuality. This was one of my earliest novels and it remains one of which I’m particularly proud (Dr. Gold).
Dr. Arnie Roth, a family practitioner, develops viral encephalitis, an infection of brain tissue and the covering of the brain. He awakens from the near-death experience with a new appreciation for life and an unexpected talent—his sensitivity to smell has increased a thousand-fold. His colleagues are amazed by his newly found diagnostic abilities. His wife and children find his ability fantastic and disconcerting.
At first Arnie is enthralled with his talented nose as he savors the aromatic delights of his world. However, he quickly discovers that not all smells are sweet, and many come with unsolicited messages that profoundly affect his psyche.
Arnie can detect danger, disease, drugs, and when people are lying to him. Soon, Arnie’s sixth sense takes over his life, putting his sanity in jeopardy.
The Sixth Sense is highly entertaining, thought-provoking, and often touching journey through a world that influences us every day, but one that we know too little about.
