Poetry. DAYS & NIGHTS IN HENDON was written in the last months of a five-year sojourn in the High Down (Hendon), which has moved on from its heyday as the prime source of horse feed in London. Urban sprawl has superimposed itself on the open fields, and the sky above is a rash of spume from Heathrow jets, one every minute. Not a fashionable place to live, it's said. But the High Down retains a certain pastoral laziness, a straw-in-the-teeth mentality. The people live here in their fashion, fashioning a life that deserves celebration. Augustus Young has worked as an epidemiologist in London. His LAMPION AND HIS LITERATURE OF THE CORDEL IN BRAZIL was published by Menard in 1994 and is also available from SPD.
