EUGENE In the 1950’s, my grandmother rode around the country with Charlie Starkweather. They terrorized the countryside. They shot people up, or rather, he shot people up, and they stole from the dead people’s houses and made a life for themselves on the run. Sure, they were hopelessly in love, but how could a love like that sustain itself? CORA How could it, Eugene? How could it, really? And that’s what I used to think. I used to think that a relationship could only ever end two ways. Either you get married, or you break up. That’s how I thought about it. But you know what? That’s not true. Because what if the other person gets the electric chair? That certainly would be a change of plans.
