The Golden Web

With the ending of the Peninsular War, Wellington's army is disbanded and a young officer of Hussars, Major Alexander Lacey, rides home to England. He returns to his native county of Sussex to take up residence at Blakestone House: in bygone days a grand and ancient mansion but now alas, a blackened ruin devastated by an inexplicable fire and also the scene of untimely death. His sudden and unexpected arrival is greeted with immediate suspicion and deep hostility from his near neighbours; among them the Lady Elisa Maytland, a wild and wilful girl with a temper as fiery as her red gold hair. Then the major encounters a beautiful young widow to whom he had once lost his heart and soon he seeks to rekindle the flame. However past events concerning a dangerous venture begin to threaten his life as he attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding Blakestone House.
