This well illustrated volume tells the many faceted story of the discovery of the Jenny Lind figurehead in a barn in Sweden in 1994, the author’s six year search for its origin, the history of the clipper Nightingale, the life of Boston figurehead carver John Mason, and the life of Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale. Included are photos from the author’s research as well as many photos of figureheads, Jenny Lind, and the rediscovered figurehead/scarecrow. Karl-Eric Svärdskog, former English teacher, turned maritime anitque enthusiast, unravels the mystery of the figurehead’s origin, using the research methods suggested to him by leading figurehead researchers from America and Europe.
