Hens and Chickens is the first book in The Sovereign Series by Maine farmer, author, beekeeper, and itinerant Quaker minister Jennifer Wixson. Book 2, Peas, Beans & Corn, was published in June 2013, Book 3 The Songbird of Sovereign was released in July 2014, and Book 4, The Minister's Daughter in September 2015. Book 5, Maggie's Dilemma, and a companion Sovereign Series cookbook are slated for publication in 2016. Although the books in The Sovereign Series progress in time generally by one year (Wixson writes in winter when her farm work is fallow), each is a standalone novel. Active in the local food movement (she raises Scottish Highland cattle for beef, cranberries, and honey), food, farming, fun and Maine history play important roles in each novel, as does the kindness and compassion of friends and neighbors in the fictitious small town of Sovereign, Maine.
