Ben Carter, a farm boy living in the Tennessee mountains in 1807, is asked to deliver a message to Bayou Pierre in Mississippi Territory, and to travel with his brother Matt, a post-rider on the Natchez Trace. The Trace is the only reliable route between Tennessee and Mississippi, for honest folk and highwaymen, alike. The purpose of the trip is secret, but Ben is told it is a service to his country. As trouble follows the boys down the trail, Ben overhears talk about Aaron Burr's schemes that convinces him he must learn what is in the document the brothers are delivering.
