Ian, a precocious boy from the Northwestern Forests of the Region, is nearing fifteen years old – the age of manhood. Rather than letting him choose his own fate, the elders of his small village force him to become the apprentice of an eccentric local mage, in order to be rid of him and his habit of asking troublesome questions. But when the all-consuming destructive force known as the Decay advances on his home, Ian and his companions must flee from the mountains to the Capital, a journey fraught with danger from orcs, super-intelligent vultures, and some of the Region’s less desirable residents. Along the way, they meet a mysterious stranger who promises to reveal the Region’s greatest secret – if they’ll help him escape from it.
