Little Giraffe in a Scarf is a picture book exploring the themes of environmental sustainability, family and culture. The narrative aims to capture the joy of purchasing a second-hand toy, and the excitement it brings to the child depicted by Little Giraffe.Whilst the story reflects a Western backdrop, a key feature of this narrative is that it employs the terms Mama and Baba for Mummy and Daddy respectively, which is customary in African and Eastern cultures. In doing so, this book aims to create acceptance for families who identify with these ethnic backgrounds, and provides cultural awareness to those who would like to be inclusive of these associations. The choice of a giraffe as a main character is both a personal favourite of my son, for whom this book was written, as well as a nod to the book's embrace of African culture, as the giraffe's natural habitat is predominantly in East Africa.
