This novel, complete in itself, is a chapter of man's dark and fear-drenched past; it carries still further the story of human progress begun in Darkness and the Deep and continued in The Golden Rooms. Man is slowly attaining to some extent mastery over his environment; from being the haunted he has become the hunter. But within his won group he is no longer the master, for he has fallen under the sway of the Old Woman of the family — we see him driven from the comfort of the friendly fire not only by his hunger but also by her command. The magical rites of the matriarch bring rain to make the crops grow, bring children to the women; a desperate improvised ritual even saves the Moon Goddess one night when she is attached and swallowed by an unknown monster. But these people need the protection of their own inventiveness and cunning as well as magic; they fashion the first canoe, even finally domesticate the goat, bringing a little more security to their hostile and ghost-ridden world.During the past few years these stories of primitive man by Mr. Fisher have been winning an increasingly larger audience. Neither those who have read the two previous volumes nor those unacquainted with those works will be disappointed in INTIMATIONS OF EVE.
