Humanity met aliens, and found them hostile. After years of war and decades of occupation, the O'stari left as inexplicably as they arrived. Twenty years later, the remnants scrape out a meager existence in the deserts of Earth. When a half-human daughter of the O'stari teams up with a scavenger to find her own origins, they discover a far more ominous truth. As they travel, their steps are shadowed by the masked Prophet, founder of the spark priest orders—temples devoted to science and engineering—but to what purpose?
