A policeman patrolling a beat near Cardigan Square in the respectable watering place of Engleton-on-Sea hears a scream, and a woman in a state of dishabille rushes out crying that someone in her huse is dead. The policeman finds a young and attractive woman - Pearl Ingleby - strangled with one of her own stockings; there is evidence of a struggle, but the crime seems motiveless. The local police start investigations, and Inspector James and Sergeant Durrant soon discover that the dead woman is by no means the simple, harmless and respectable member of society she appeared. They are plunged into a mysterious and macabre affair in which Sally Graham, Jim Durrant's fiancee, is involved, and are confronted with what seems a case hopeless of solution. But the murderer makes a mistake ...
