Alex and Rebecca are in a peculiar stage of their relationship. Alex feels that Rebecca is pulling away, distancing herself, and he blames her parents' deeply instilled Catholic guilt. Once upon a time, his girlfriend had been much more accepting of their life together, but these days sex and even simple conversation seem a strained and cumbersome affair. Alex's co-worker Mattie feels the young man's frustration and offers to share an evening and his stash of hallucinogenic mushrooms with the couple, believing that if they can speak more honestly without the burden of social protocol, they can repair the rift that has grown between them. But as with all plans, sometimes the unexpected becomes the norm, and as Alex comes down with a vicious case of heartburn from ingesting the mushrooms, Rebecca and Mattie form a deep connection, which could lead Alex to another kind of heartburn.
